"On This Day In Michigan History
On May 28, 1913, the Michigan Historical Commission organized in Lansing. The organization succeeded the Michigan Pioneer and Historical Society of Michigan.

Readers should note that the Commission continues to have responsibility to help Michigan commemorate the Civil War Sesquicentennial. Its next meeting on Mackinac Island on June 10 will include a report on the CWS including both recent and forthcoming activities.
Note also: the Historical Society of Michigan continues to exist and do good work; the Commission when created in 1913 took over certain functions from the Society that were regarded as necessarily the province of a public body responsive to the citizenry.
