As 2013 winds down, a look back at these past 12 months, along with the prior time, involved in Michigan's commemoration of the Civil War Sesquicentennial is appropriate. Let's hope that 2014 will be a year of many positives.
The past year has been a good one. As the Civil War Partners website shows, it's been another 12 months of lots of events commemorating Michigan's efforts in the conflict. Take a look at the attached report from September, before the events at Gettysburg last month. It's safe to say that the command issued in 2007 to the Michigan Historical Commission, and taken up by lots of volunteers, for an appropriate commemoration is still occurring. Classically, only another year and a half or so remains in the commemoration. But a lasting legacy can be created during that time to convert a temporary set of commemorations into something enduring.
