A lot has been happening on the Michigan Civil War preservation front lately, a wonderful development during the CWS. The first of several items will appear here today, an article about progress on the Grand Army of the Republic building at Grand River Avenue and Cass in downtown Detroit. It's a fantastic building, full of potential, evocative of the memory of veterans of the Civil War who congregated there. For years it's been boarded up, accessible only to those who 'camped' there. Now, thanks to the Civil War enthusiasts at Mindfield, the new owners, the building is coming back to life: GAR rehab off and running
On the top floor is a huge auditorium with "GAR" still visible. A consent agreement between the SUVCW and DUVCW and the City of Detroit will require at least part of the building to be used to exhibit Civil War memorabilia. The Michigan Historical Commission has offered its services to assist Mindfield in the effort.
