Michigan and the Civil War: A Great and Bloody Sacrifice
Author Jack Dempsey will tell Michigan's heroic role in saving the Union. The story begins with our state's rapid response to President Lincoln's call for volunteers and ends with Lee's surrender at Appomattox and the Fourth Michigan Cavalry apprehending Jefferson Davis. Mr. Dempsey will include new research into Michigan's role in the Civil War.
Jack Dempsey is a partner at the law firm of Dickinson Wright PLLC in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Born in Detroit, Mr. Dempsey received his undergraduate degree in political science from Michigan State University and his law degree from George Washington University. He is vice-president of the Michigan Historical Commission and Chairman of the Michigan History Foundation. He is also a member of the board of the Historical Society of Michigan, life member of the Plymouth Historical Society, and regular member of the Michigan Historic Preservation Network, the Ann Arbor Civil War Round Table, the Civil War Trust, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Preservation Wayne, the Detroit Historical Society,and the Henry Ford. He and his wife Suzanne reside in Plymouth, Michigan.
In addition to various legal articles he is author of Victorious Valor: Michigan Troops in the Civil War's Greatest Battles, A Tale of Brave Ulysses, Centennial Legacy: the Michigan Civil War Observance Commission and his latest book Michigan and the Civil War: A great and Bloody Sacrifice. He will bring copies of his book to purchase and sign.
