Many Civil War-era notables have their final resting place in Historic Elmwood Cemetery. Some statesmen and generals will be featured here in coming posts, but first comes someone who deserves to be remembered for encapsulating the raison d'etre for Michigan's participation.
Winifred Lee Brent Lyster of Detroit -- whose husband Henry served as a Union surgeon -- was inspired after reading the feats of Michigan troops at the battle of Fredericksburg. The lyrics still sing, 146 years later.
