This bill would extend the Civil War Battlefield Preservation Act beyond 9/30/08, for five more years. After urging from the Civil War Preservation Trust, I wrote my two Senators and my Congressman, requesting their support and action on the legislation. What were the responses?
From the two Senators I got the standard "thanks for writing, here's what the bill would do, and I'll be sure to keep your views in mind if and when the bill is taken up." Senators get a lot of mail from constituents and others, so not a surprise.
From Thaddeus McCotter, however, I got a very different letter this past weekend. Here's some of what the Congressman said:
"As a co-sponsor of H.R. 2933, I agree with you. [yes, it was in bold and underlined!]
As you know, the preserved battlefields of the Civil War provide an opportunity for Americans to understand a tragic yet pivotal point in American history. ... Truly, we must never allow the sacrifice of our Civil War veterans, who gave their last full measures of devotion for our nation's 'new birth of freedom,' must be preserved for this and the future generations of Americans inheriting this blessed legacy.
Rest assured, then, your support for H.R. 2933 ... will be well remembered during the 110th Congress."
Well remembered? Huzzah!
